As of 1928, Plauener Spinnhütte GmbH bought silk cocoons of indigenous production and produced the finest silk yarns and threads according to a patented manufacturing method.
Until 1945 in the West and 1967 in the East of Germany, Spinnhütte was the sole enterprise with the right of buying cocoons from indigenous production. In turn, Spinnhütte supplied the breeding material of the silkworm moth to schools and gardens for their sideline business. Feeding on mulberry leaves the silkworm moth underwent various caterpillar stages until it pupated into a cocoon in the "Spinning Hut" frame. The cocoons were then delivered back to the Spinnhütte for further processing (manufacturing of silk yarn for the own weaving mill).

Since 1967, Spinnhütte has been buying silk roving yarn from Brazil and China, as both the climatic conditions as well as the rising wages did not make silk production profitable in Germany any longer.
Spinnhütte processes
silk of different qualities, for instance, mulberry silk or greg silk, tram silk, shape silk, wild silk (tussah) and bourrette silk.
